My Approach to Couples Therapy

I believe that every kind of partnership can benefit from therapy, regardless of relationship type, current quality or how long you've been together - the most important thing in any relationship is simply, to talk ... effectively!

Whether you wish to discuss communication, sex, power dynamics, money, your emotional connection, an affair or something unresolved and long past, I offer a safe and supportive environment where you can both openly discuss your perspectives, and work towards a happier and healthier relationship - one where the two of you consciously take charge of your relationship and create it as you want it to be.  â€‹

My approach is grounded in a deep understanding of inter-personal psychology & relationship dynamics - the how and why two (or more) people interact with each other as they do. In becoming more aware of persistent patterns, clients typically find themselves better equipped to go forward, in healthier, more fulfilling & often unexpected ways!

I use a range of approaches to challenge your pre-existing notions about each other, safely grounded in my neutrality & expertise. In addition to facilitating a therapeutic dialogue, practical interventions might include in-session coaching & role play, homework exercises & psycho-education. Individual sessions are also a key part of couples therapy.

Providing bespoke support to each couple ultimately helps partners to gain more understanding of the underlying difficulties - which in my experience can be quite different to the presenting issues. At this point, efforts to repair & rebuild, or indeed find peace if there is decision to separate are more effective, feel more natural and are ultimately sustainable over the long term.

How it works

Having a great relationship is too important to put off until the kids are older, work's less stressful, or the next pay rise - when life may get a little easier. Whether considering couple's therapy for the first time, or indeed if you haven't had a great experience in the past I encourage you to give it a try. Here's how:
Colleagues at Work

1.Initial Contact

My online booking form is the best way to get started as you can see my availability at a glance & book yourself in for an initial consultation.

If you have any questions about the service, please do read across the site as most FAQs should be answered here.

However, if  there's something specific you want to talk through, or you simply want to check me out first, let's schedule a brief call via the Contact Form - usually this can be with just one of you, but whatever works for you!

2. Assessment Interview

The couples assessment is a one hour consultation designed for both of you to share your thoughts on the issues to address, and the results you want to achieve. My role here is to be neutral & facilitate a balanced conversation so we can all decide if couple's therapy is right for you. At the end of the appointment I will share my initial thoughts on how I see the difficulties, and how we might proceed. This may include a suggestion for separate 1:1 sessions. You may prefer to go away and discuss together before letting me know if you want to continue.

3. Regular Sessions

As part of the therapeutic process, I ask clients to make a verbal commitment to see me for  6 x 1 hour weekly/ fortnightly appointments following the assessment. This is usually enough time to get acquainted and for you to see some initial benefits. Most of my clients choose to see me for longer than this, but my aim is always for you to achieve your goals quickly and sustainably. The process is always under review and sessions can become less frequent once we have established a good therapeutic alliance.

[Before we separated] I just thought I was a bit broken. Now I have a feeling of freedom & joy that I could never have imagined before
